Plant Story

Nelumbo nucifera, commonly known as lotus or sacred lotus, is a beautiful aquatic plant growing in ponds, lakes in various parts of the world, particularly in Asia. Lotus flowers have profound cultural and symbolic significance in Buddhist traditions. It symbolized purity, enlightenment, and spiritual awakening. Various parts of this plant are edible and used in Asian cuisine. The roots, seeds, leaves, and flowers are used as ingredients in various dishes and made into teas. Among them, the flower tea was believed to have many benefits such as improving digestion, reducing stress and anxiety, boosting immunity, and detoxifying body.

 

Various flavonoids have been identified in lotus flowers including quercetin, luteolin, luteolin glucoside, kaempferol, kaempferol-3-O-glucoside, and isoquercitrin. It was reported that the lotus flower extract shows anti-oxidant activity by radical scavenging. It also shows skin brightening and anti-wrinkle activities by inhibiting tyrosinase and elastase. The hydroalcoholic extract of lotus flower was reported to possess anti-microbial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus.
