Plant Story

Thuja occidentalis, known as arbor vitae or white cedar, is an evergreen coniferous tree native to northeastern North America. Arbor vitae means “tree of life” in Latin and it has been widely used for medicinal purposes. In particular, arbor vitae was an important tree in traditional Ojibwe culture, where it was one of four plants of the Ojibwe medicine wheel. In addition, arbor vitae was used as a tincture or ointment to treat warts, ringworms, and thrush in the 19th century. It is also believed that arbor vitae is effective for treating bronchial infections, psoriasis, and rheumatism.

Arbor vitae contains various bioactive compounds and phenolic compounds that are important constituents. A study reported that it possesses anti-oxidant activity analyzed by DPPH, ABTS, NO, and lipid peroxidation assays. In this study, the authors discussed that the anti-oxidant activity is perhaps due to its high phenolic content.
