Plant Story

Hyssopus officinalis is a semi-evergreen, aromatic shrub native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. It is thought that ancient Greek people used H. officinalis to treat throat and lung inflammations. H. officinalis is edible and can be used in salads and as a flavoring. In herbal medicine, H. officinalis has been used for soothing, cough suppressing, and expectorant properties. It is also known to be antiseptic, astringent, sedative, stimulant, stomachic, and tonic.

Phenolic compounds such as rosmarinic acid, chlorogenic acid, protocatechuic acid, caffeic acid, and isoquercitrin have been identified in hyssop. Anti-oxidant activity of hyssop was analyzed by DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays. Another study reported higher content of flavonoid in flowers compared to leaf and stem of H. officinalis, and DPPH scavenging activity was greater in flower than in stem.
