Plant Story

Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) is a tender perennial of the sunflower family and is native to parts of Brazil and Paraguay. It has been used and cultivated for more than 1,500 years due to its sweet leaves. These plants are found in the wild in semiarid habitats ranging from grasslands to mountain terrain, but favor humid, wet environments. Since its discovery as a sweetening compound containing steviol glycosides, which is said to have 250-300 times the sweetness of sugar, it has been commercially cultivated and can be found commonly as a generic, non-caloric sweetener known as “stevia”.

To date, there are many publications that have investigated the plant’s composition in search of potential health applications, other than used as a novel sweetener. Water extract of stevia leaf contains phenolic compounds such as caffeic acid, protocatechuic acid, catechin, and catechin derivatives. Studies have shown anti-oxidant activity of stevia leaves by DPPH and ABTS assays, Fe2+ chelating capacity, and hydroxyl radial and superoxide radical scavenging activities. In addition to being a naturally occurring anti-oxidant, further studies indicate that stevia extracts also have anti-microbial properties that are effective against several microorganisms, such as Staphylococcus aureusRhizopus oligosporus, and Aspergillus niger.
